One Shots: MAN OF STEEL (2013)

It's a bird*, it's a plane, it's the most anticipated movie of the year! And more specifically, it's Dru, Dave, and James to talk about Man of Steel. This is a spoiler-filled discussion, but if you're precious and delicate and haven't seen the movie yet, you can safely listen to the beginning of the show to hear our general thoughts. We'll give you a head's up before we start a-spoilin'.

* A fantastic tweet from friend of the show, Jeremy Woodcock: "@Superman What on earth are you doing that people think you're a bird first? Flapping your arms? Don't do that. Don't fly like that." Follow him @jwpencilandpad. Seriously!

Dru on Blu: July 2013

Some people wanted to stop me. Some people wanted to silence my voice. Some people directed a terrible Captain America movie in the early 1990s. But some people are going to have to deal with it, because I'm back with another Dru on Blu, covering up to the end of July 2013.

First up, a few titles that are already available that slipped through the cracks on the last instalment. We'll start with a film I had not heard of, Bad Kids Go to Hell, which is directed by Matthew Spradlin and based on his own graphic novel of the same name. I'll be honest: never heard of either. Judd Nelson's in the movie version, and perhaps not coincidentally the logline reads like The Breakfast Club with a murder twist. According to IMDb, "On a stormy Saturday afternoon, six students from Crestview Academy begin to meet horrible fates as they serve out their detentions. Is a fellow student to blame, or perhaps Crestview's alleged ghosts are behind the terrible acts?" It's been out on DVD since April 9, 2013. If you see it, let us know what you thought! Episode 39. WATCHMEN (2009)

Nothing ever ends, especially not podcasts about Zack Snyder's Watchmen! Clocking in at about half the length of the movie, this episode of 24 Panels with guest Andrew Kannegiesser covers just about everything you want to know about this underrated revisionist superhero film: Is it better than the book? Is Ozymandias justified in his actions? Was Malin Ackerman that bad? And most importantly, was Danny Woodburn pulling our collective leg? Tune in to find out!

Episode breakdown:
0:00 - 10:58: Opening banter (Woodburn-gate, Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups)
10:58 - 11:49: Watchmen trailer
11:49 - 1:21:54: Main discussion: Watchmen
1:21:54 - 1:30:20: Closing remarks

Episode 36. ALL-STAR SUPERMAN (2011)

All-Star Superman, the comic, teamed an all-star creative team—Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely—with all-star characters—Superman, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, etc.—for a legendary limited run of 12 issues. All-Star Superman, the film, combines this all-star comic with the all-stars of DC Animation—including the voice casting of Andrea Romano and the production of Bruce Timm—resulting in what is arguably one of their best direct-to-DVD efforts. It's only fitting that the all-stars of podcasting—Dru and Dave... OK, fine, we're pretty much the bottom of the podcast barrel, but at least we love us some Superman. Listen in as we gush over the god, the myth, the man: All-Star Superman.

Episode breakdown:
0:00 - 12:47: Opening banter (including our apologies to James, the Festival de Nouveau Cinema, the extent of Dru's terrible memory, Dave's attempts to see Looper)
12:47 - 13:23: All-Star Superman trailer
13:23 - 1:11:22: Main discussion: All-Star Superman
1:11:22 - 1:20:54: Closing remarks (including Condorman)

Episode 35. SUPERMAN: DOOMSDAY (2007)

It's the battle you've waited your whole life for: two god-like titans duking it out in a bloody, destructive fight to the death. Who will come out on top? Superdave, fighting for truth, justice, and the suburban Ontario way? Or Druoomsday, the rocky hulk of a creature with Neil Young-esque sideburns and a receding hairline? You'll have to listen to this episode of 24 Panels Per Second to find out.

Episode breakdown:
0:00 - 24:48: Opening banter (featuring the Peanuts gang, Blendtec blenders, a delicious non-alcoholic toddy recipe, and why you need to go see Dredd in theatres before it's too late!)
24:48 - 25:42: Superman: Doomsday trailer
25:42 - 1:25:43: Main discussion: Superman: Doomsday
1:25:43 - 1:31:05: Closing remarks (The Dark Knight Returns: Part One, Dru's off the 'book)

Episode 31. BATMAN BEGINS (2005)

Dru and Dave are back in Nolan's Gotham City to see how it all began with Batman Begins, just in time to see how it all ends in this summer's The Dark Knight Rises. And so ends our series on series being continued, restarted, and finished this summer. Stay tuned to the 24 Panels blog while we're off, and we'll be back in August with more episodes! Until then, always remember: never turn left on Albequerque.

Episode breakdown:
0:00 - 16:45: Intro banter (Upcoming series announced, WB's Justice League movie)
16:45 - 17:37: Batman Begins trailer
17:37 - 1:11:24: Main discussion
1:11:24 - 1:17:21: Closing remarks (Prometheus)

Addenda:
Dru, circa 2008, with Tumblr. Notice the oblivious security guard, right.

Episode 28. THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)

Is there anything left to say about Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight? Dru and Dave think so. And with The Dark Knight Rises on the immediate horizon, 24 Panels Per Second is definitely the podcast you deserve, and the one you need right now. (Does that line make any more sense here than it does in the movie? I doubt it.) Andrew Kannegiesser is truly a "white knight" for sitting in with us once again.

Episode breakdown:
0:00 - 6:16: Intro banter (Facebook problems)
6:16 - 6:49: The Dark Knight trailer
6:49 - 1:44:07: Main discussion: The Dark Knight
1:44:07 - 1:47:34: Closing remarks
